Located in the extreme west of Europe, Brittany prides itself on its natural heritage, cultural diversity and capacity for research and innovation. The region is bordered on three sides by the Atlantic and the English Channel, and its economy relies heavily on its living resources (agriculture, fishing and tourism), making it particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change.
A member of the nrg4sd since 2005 and host of the regional governments' World Summit on climate change, Brittany introduced a regional energy plan in 2007 aimed at achieving a 20% reduction in its energy consumption by 2020 and a 75% reduction by 2050.
Nrg4SD is the international Network of Regional Governments for Sustainable Development, present in the five continents.
The Network was formed by the regional governments that attended the Johannesburg World Summit on Sustainable Development in 2002, to share information and experience about sustainable development policy-making at the regional (sub-national) level of governance. They agreed the Gauteng Declaration which is the founding document of the Network.
brings together 156 regions from 28 Member States, both members and non-members of the European Union. Representing almost 200 million people, it campaigns in favour of a more balanced development of the Community territory.
